Description: “IOK, the intermunicipal development company for the Kempen, aims to support the 29 municipalities that are part of its network. Its extensive range of services includes industrial land policy, social land policy, and a variety of supportive services related to extended local governance. This encompasses intermunicipal environmental services, workplace safety and well-being, legal advice, spatial planning, and technical services.
IOK Waste Management provides integrated waste treatment for a population of over half a million residents in the Kempen area. For more than 25 years, the focus has been on waste prevention and sustainable materials management. This waste policy, characterized by thorough selective collection and strong communication efforts, has resulted in the Kempen municipalities achieving the lowest residual waste figures and the highest recycling rates in Flanders. IOK Waste Management is a pioneer in selective collection, having started separate collection of organic waste in 1990, quickly followed by paper and packaging waste.
The organization also manages a mechanical-biological separation facility for residual waste and operates its own composting facility that produces compost and green gas. With a high percentage of households composting their organic waste, IOK continues to promote sustainable practices within the community.”
